Taxes

The right tax on each order

Tanqory Taxes charges sales tax, VAT or GST on each order, from your rates or a connected tax service. To change a rate, ask the built-in assistant and confirm.

Tax settings

Tax rules that fit how you sell

Four settings cover most of what a store needs: how prices show tax, where you collect it, which products differ and which buyers are exempt. Each one is a screen in your admin.

Tax included, or added

Tick Include sales tax in product price and shipping rate under Tax display and calculation, and the price a buyer sees is the total they pay. Leave it clear and tax is added at checkout.

Example: a €84.00 order with €6.90 shipping, sent to Berlin. With the box clear, 19% VAT adds €17.27 and the buyer pays €108.17.

Set up a region once

Tax regions follow your shipping zones. Open a region, choose Manual Tax or Automatic Tax, and every order shipped there uses that choice. European Union countries share one region.

Example: Canada at 5% with 8% added for Ontario. A CA$80.00 order shipped to Toronto is charged CA$10.40.

Different rates for some products

On the region, choose Add override and pick a collection, a location and a rate. Products in that collection use the override there; everything else keeps the base rate.

Example: children's books in Germany at 7% in place of 19%. A €12.00 book has €0.84 of VAT added, not €2.28.

Sell to tax-exempt buyers

Open the customer, choose Edit tax details and select Don't collect tax. Collect tax unless exemptions apply marks a buyer whose exemption is not confirmed yet as Tax exempt (pending).

Example: a reseller you set to Don't collect tax orders $240.00 of mugs and pays $240.00.

Customs details on each product

Orders that cross a border need a country of origin, an HS code and a customs description. Enter them once on the product, or fill the gaps in bulk with CSV import.

Built-in assistant

Change a tax rate by asking, and check it before it is saved

Tell the assistant in your admin the rate and where it applies. It reads the region as it stands, fills in the change and shows it to you, now and after. Nothing is saved until you confirm, so you can catch a wrong rate before a buyer is charged.

  • Region rates, state and province rates, collection and shipping overrides

  • Prices with tax included, tax on shipping, VAT on digital goods

  • Ask where you collect tax and at what rate; it answers from your settings

  • Part of every plan, and asking it uses no AI credits

Questions

Does Tanqory set my tax rates for me?

You choose for each tax region. With Manual Tax you type the rate for each country, state or province yourself and update it when a rate changes. Rates start at 0, and Reset to default tax rates fills in the current defaults for that region. With Automatic Tax a tax provider you connect, such as Stripe Tax, TaxJar or Avalara, calculates the tax on each order in that region.

Can the assistant set up my taxes for me?

It makes the changes you ask for. Tell the assistant in your admin the rate and the region, state or province it applies to, or the collection that needs its own rate, and it shows you the change. Nothing is saved until you confirm. It can also switch prices to tax included, turn tax on shipping on or off, and tell you where you collect tax today. You decide the rates; registering, filing and paying the tax stay with you. The assistant is part of every plan, and asking it uses no AI credits.

Do I need to register before I collect tax?

In most places, yes: you register with the tax authority before you charge its tax, and many places set a sales threshold that starts the duty. Tanqory does not register for you, and the admin does not track thresholds. A new store charges nothing until you turn collection on, so you can wait until you are registered. With Automatic Tax, jurisdiction coverage and nexus tracking come from the provider you connect. If you are unsure about your obligations, ask a tax professional.

Can my prices include tax?

Yes. Tick Include sales tax in product price and shipping rate under Tax display and calculation. The price a buyer sees is then the total they pay, and the tax is shown as included: a €100.00 price sold to Berlin holds €15.97 of 19% VAT. Leave it clear and tax is added at checkout. The setting applies to the whole store, and for stores based in some countries the admin warns that prices shouldn't include taxes.

Is tax charged on shipping?

Charge sales tax on shipping is a setting of its own, and it is on by default. For Canada, the European Union and the United States it is calculated automatically. In a Manual Tax region you can also add a shipping override, so shipping to one location uses its own rate.

Can one product be taxed at a different rate?

Yes. Put the products in a collection and add a product override on the region: choose the collection, the location and the rate. Shipping can have its own override for a location. Example: a collection of children's books in Germany at 7% in place of the 19% base rate.

How is tax handled on digital goods?

Tick Charge VAT on digital goods under Tax display and calculation. VAT is then applied at checkout, for European customers, to the products in the collection named Digital Goods VAT Tax. You can change which collection is used. The setting is off by default.

How do I sell to a customer who is exempt from tax?

Open the customer, choose Edit tax details and select Don't collect tax. Choose Collect tax unless exemptions apply when the exemption is not confirmed yet; the customer then shows as Tax exempt (pending). The customers list has a Tax exempt column that reads Yes, Pending or No, so you can see who is set up.

What happens to tax when I refund an order?

The refund returns tax in proportion to what you refund, taken from the tax the order recorded when it was placed. It is not recalculated, so a rate you changed later does not alter the refund of an older order. Example: an order of two €50.00 items recorded €19.00 of VAT. Refund one item and €9.50 of VAT goes back with it.

Which tax providers can I connect?

Stripe Tax, TaxJar and Avalara. Connect one under Tax service, then set each region you want it to cover to Automatic Tax. You register with the provider and pay its fees directly. Switching a region back to Manual Tax turns the provider off for that region, and you type the rates again.

Does Tanqory file my tax returns?

No. Tanqory calculates tax on your orders and collects it at checkout. Registering with a tax authority, filing returns and paying over the tax you collected stay with you, so check your obligations with a tax adviser. Sales totals in analytics show the tax you collected for the period you choose, which gives you the figure to check against your return.

What do I need for customs on international orders?

A country of origin, a Harmonized System (HS) code and a customs description for each product. Enter them on the product's Shipping card, or fill the gaps in bulk with CSV import. The Customs information card in Taxes and duties shows how many variants have them.
