Start an online business in Slovakia

The steps the government of Slovakia sets for a new business that sells online, each linked to the official page that runs it, then the steps to open your store. Read from the official sources on October 14, 2026.

Set up your business in Slovakia

The steps in the order most new sellers take them. Each is read from the official page linked under it.

  1. 1. Choose a legal form

The slovensko.sk portal names the živnostník (sole trader) as the main natural person entrepreneur and lists the spoločnosť s ručením obmedzeným (s. r. o.) among legal forms for companies.

  2. 2. Register the business

A živnosť is registered with the trade office (živnostenský register) via slovensko.sk or a jednotné kontaktné miesto, and an s. r. o. with the register court (obchodný register).

  3. 3. Get your tax number

The tax office (Finančná správa) registers a živnostník automatically from register data and assigns a daňové identifikačné číslo (DIČ); VAT payers receive an IČ DPH.

  4. 4. Check when you must register for VAT

Finančná správa states a taxable person must register for VAT once turnover exceeds 50 000 eur in a calendar year (immediately on exceeding 62 500 eur), effective from 1 January 2025.

  5. 5. Follow the rules for selling online

The EU Your Europe page sets out B2C e-commerce and distance selling duties, including the customer's 14 day right of withdrawal.
