Set up your business in Belgium

The steps in the order most new sellers take them. Each is read from the official page linked under it.

  1. 1. Choose a legal form

business.belgium.be compares the eenmanszaak (sole proprietorship) and the besloten vennootschap (BV), described as the basic company form.

  2. 2. Register the business

A sole trader or company registers in the Kruispuntbank van Ondernemingen (KBO/BCE) through an approved ondernemingsloket (business counter), fee EUR 111,50.

  3. 3. Get your tax number

The 10-digit ondernemingsnummer from the KBO doubles as the VAT number with prefix BE, activated by FOD Financien (FPS Finance).

  4. 4. Check when you must register for VAT

When a business in Belgium must register for VAT is on the taxes page, with its official source.

  5. 5. Follow the rules for selling online

FOD Economie page "Verkoop op afstand" sets out distance-selling rules including the 14-day withdrawal right.
