Set up your business in Ireland
The steps in the order most new sellers take them. Each is read from the official page linked under it.
1. Choose a legal form
Revenue names sole trader, partnership and company, and the CRO names the Private Company Limited by Shares (LTD company).
2. Register the business
Companies and business names register with the Companies Registration Office (CRO), and sole traders register for tax with Revenue.
3. Get your tax number
Revenue issues a Tax Reference Number (TRN), which for a sole trader is the same as their PPSN once registered, and a separate TRN for a partnership or company.
4. Check when you must register for VAT
Revenue states VAT registration is obligatory above €42,500 for services and €85,000 for goods (page published 06 May 2026, thresholds effective 1 January 2025 per the EU SME portal).
5. Follow the rules for selling online
The Competition and Consumer Protection Commission explains a business's legal obligations when selling products to consumers, including online.
