Set up your business in Hungary
The steps in the order most new sellers take them. Each is read from the official page linked under it.
1. Choose a legal form
Official sources name egyéni vállalkozó (sole trader) and korlátolt felelősségű társaság (Kft, limited liability company).
2. Register the business
A sole trader (egyéni vállalkozó) registers with the tax authority NAV online or at a NAV office, and companies are registered by the courts of registration, with data published by the Ministry of Justice Company Information Service.
3. Get your tax number
NAV assigns the sole trader's tax number (adószám) immediately on correct registration and obtains the statistical number.
4. Check when you must register for VAT
NAV states the subject VAT exemption (alanyi adómentesség) threshold rises from 18 million forints to 20 million forints from 2026, 22 million from 2027 and 24 million from 2028.
5. Follow the rules for selling online
The EU Your Europe page sets out the EU consumer rules on contracts, distance selling and returns that apply in Hungary.
