What is a shipping policy?

A shipping policy tells customers when their order leaves you, what delivery costs, how long it takes, which carriers bring it and what happens when a parcel is late, lost or damaged. Buyers read it before they order from a store they do not know.

Does my store need a shipping policy?

In many places the law asks for what a shipping policy says. EU and UK sellers must give delivery costs and the delivery time before the sale, Brazil asks for both before the purchase, and in the US the FTC expects you to ship in the time you state. A clear policy is also the page that answers most delivery questions before they reach you.

Is this shipping policy generator free and private?

Yes. There is no sign-up and no email to give. The policy is put together in your browser as you answer: nothing you type is sent to Tanqory or anyone else, and nothing is saved when you close the page, so copy it as text or download Markdown or HTML before you leave.

How long can I take to deliver an order?

As long as you tell the buyer before the sale, within limits. In the EU and UK the limit is 30 days from the order unless you agree another date. In the US you ship within the time you state, or 30 days when you state none, and send a delay notice if you cannot. Your own processing and delivery times go into the draft as you type them.

Who pays import duties on international orders?

Whoever your policy says, as long as the buyer knows before paying. Either the carrier collects duties and taxes from the buyer on delivery, or your prices include them. Pick one in the generator and the draft says what happens when a buyer will not pay them.

Who is responsible for a lost or stolen parcel?

In the EU and UK a parcel stays at the seller’s risk until the buyer, or someone they named, has it in hand. Elsewhere it depends on your policy and your carrier. The draft says when a parcel counts as lost and what you do about it.

Is the generated policy legal advice?

No. It is a starting point written in plain words from your answers. Laws change and every business is different, so have a lawyer review your policy before you publish it, and again when you change carriers, rates or where you ship.
