What is a privacy policy?

A privacy policy is the page where a business tells people what personal information it collects, why it uses it, who it shares it with, how long it keeps it and how people can use their rights. Customers read it before they trust you with an address or a card, and payment providers, ad platforms and app stores often require one.

Does my store need a privacy policy?

Almost certainly. If you collect a name, an email address or a delivery address, laws such as GDPR in the EU and UK, the CCPA and CalOPPA in California, PIPEDA in Canada, the LGPD in Brazil and the PDPA in Thailand expect you to explain what you do with it. Australia's Privacy Act exempts many businesses with a yearly turnover of 3 million Australian dollars or less, but writing a policy is still good practice.

Is this privacy policy generator free and private?

Yes. There is no sign-up and no email to give. The policy is put together in your browser as you answer: nothing you type is sent to Tanqory or anyone else, and nothing is saved when you close the page, so copy it as text or download Markdown or HTML before you leave.

Is the generated policy legal advice?

No. It is a starting point written in plain words from your answers. Laws change and every business is different, so have a lawyer review your policy before you publish it, and again when you change how you handle data.

Which US state privacy laws does it cover?

The California section follows the CCPA as amended by the CPRA. A second section covers the 18 other state consumer privacy laws in force in 2026: Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maryland, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Oregon, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Texas, Utah and Virginia. Each law applies above its own size thresholds, which differ by state.

What does it change when I use advertising cookies?

Ad pixels and cookies that follow people across sites can count as selling or sharing under California law and as targeted advertising in other states. When you pick them, the draft explains it, adds the Do Not Sell or Share opt-out and says you honor Global Privacy Control, and the EU and UK section adds consent for cookies the store does not need.

Which other policies does my store need?

Most stores also publish a refund policy, terms of service and a shipping policy, and a cookie policy where they use cookies beyond the essentials. On Tanqory each of these has its own place in your settings and its own page on your storefront.

How often should I update my privacy policy?

Whenever you start collecting something new, add a provider, sell to a new country or start using ad tracking, and at least once a year. Change the effective date when you do, and tell customers when a change matters.
