Inside your draft

Seven banners, four kinds, one home on your store

The law where a visitor lives decides when you must ask before an optional cookie is set. Each banner shows what visitors there see, with the line your draft writes for them.

European Union

The ePrivacy Directive asks for consent before any cookie that is not strictly necessary, and the GDPR sets what consent means: a clear choice, no box ticked in advance, withdrawn as easily as given.

United Kingdom

The Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations ask for consent before most cookies that are not strictly necessary, to the UK GDPR standard. The draft asks first for every optional kind.

United States

In California, ad cookies can count as selling or sharing data: a business the law covers puts a Do Not Sell or Share link on its homepage and reads the Global Privacy Control signal as an opt-out.

Canada

PIPEDA asks for meaningful consent you can withdraw. Quebec’s Law 25 goes further: anything that can identify, locate or profile a visitor is off by default.

Brazil

Under the LGPD, consent is free, informed and unambiguous, and taking it back is free and easy. The draft asks before any optional cookie.

Thailand

The Personal Data Protection Act asks for consent clearly and separately from other terms, and withdrawing it must be as easy as giving it.

Australia

No cookie consent rule of its own: the Privacy Act asks you to say what you collect and why, and to let people opt out of direct marketing.

Everywhere else

Your own choice carries the policy: ask every visitor first, or only where the law asks, with settings to change it at any time.

What is a cookie policy?

A cookie policy tells visitors which cookies and similar technologies your store uses, who sets them, what they are for, how long they last and how to change their choices. Many stores publish it as its own page and link it from the cookie banner and the footer.

Does my store need a cookie policy?

If visitors come from the EU or UK, the law asks you to tell them clearly about the cookies you use and to ask before most that are not strictly necessary. California asks the businesses its privacy law covers for an opt-out of selling or sharing when ad cookies collect data, and Quebec, Brazil and Thailand set their own consent rules. Elsewhere it is still the page careful buyers look for.

How does the cookie policy generator work?

You answer four short steps: your business, where your customers are, the cookies and services your store uses, and how your banner asks. The policy drafts itself as you answer, with a cookie table built from the services you tick and a section for each region you pick. When it reads right, copy it as text or download it as Markdown or HTML.

Is this cookie policy generator free and private?

Yes. There is no sign-up and no email to give. The policy is put together in your browser as you answer: nothing you type is sent to Tanqory or anyone else, and nothing is saved when you close the page, so copy it as text or download Markdown or HTML before you leave.

Is a cookie policy the same as a cookie banner?

No. The banner is where visitors make their choice, and the policy is the page that explains the choice in full. In the EU and UK the banner asks before optional cookies are set, with rejecting as easy as accepting, and links to the policy for the details.

Where do the cookie names and lifetimes come from?

Each service you tick adds the cookies it lists in its own documentation, with the lifetime it states there. Services change their cookies from time to time, so check your store with your browser’s developer tools and add anything else under Other services.

What is the Global Privacy Control signal?

A browser setting that tells every site the visitor opts out of the sale and sharing of their data. California treats it as a valid opt-out request, so a store with ad cookies should switch them off for that browser, and the draft says so when you pick the United States.

Is the generated policy legal advice?

No. It is a starting point written in plain words from your answers. Laws and services change and every business is different, so have a lawyer review your policy before you publish it, and again when you add a service that sets cookies.

Which other policies does my store need?

Most stores also publish a privacy policy, terms of service, a refund policy and a shipping policy. On Tanqory each has its own place in your settings and its own page on your storefront, and our free generators draft the privacy, terms and refund policies the same way as this one.
