Reading the answers
Every answer names its source
A guess that a name is free costs you a logo, a sign and a box of printed cards. So every row says who answered and what they said.
Taken
The registry for the extension holds a record. You see the registrar and the dates the record gives, so you know whether it renews soon.
Likely available
The registry answered and has no record of the name. A registry can still hold a name back as reserved or premium, so the price at checkout is the final word.
Checked by DNS
Some country extensions, like .io and .de, have no public registry lookup. Then DNS decides: nameservers mean taken, no record means likely free on weaker evidence.

Domain name questions
What is a domain name?
It is your store's address on the web, such as harbourcoffee.store: a name you choose and an extension such as .com, .shop or .co.uk. You register it for a year or more at a time, and it points buyers to your store.
How does this checker know if a domain is taken?
Your browser asks the registry that runs the extension for its public record of the name, using RDAP, the registries' standard lookup. A record means the name is registered. It also asks a public DNS service for the name's nameservers. Each result says which source answered.
Why does it say likely available and not available?
No record at the registry is strong evidence that nobody owns the name, but a registry can still hold names back as reserved or premium. The price and the final answer show when you buy, so we do not promise more than the registry told us.
Why are some extensions checked by DNS only?
A few country extensions, such as .io and .de, publish no public registry lookup. For those the checker reads DNS: nameservers mean the name is in use, and no DNS record means it is likely free on weaker evidence.
Is what I type stored or sent anywhere else?
No. The check runs in your browser. Only the domain name goes to the registry and to the DNS service, and nothing is saved on our side. There is no sign-up.
What should I do if my name is taken?
Try another extension, such as .store, .shop or your country's own, or one of the names the checker builds from your words. Avoid adding hyphens or numbers, which buyers leave out when they type.
Should I choose .com or a country extension like .co.uk, .com.au or .ca?
If most buyers are in one country, its extension tells them you sell and ship there, and some, like .ca and .com.au, ask for a local presence. If you sell in many countries, .com, .store or .shop read the same everywhere.
Is .store or .shop as good as .com?
Buyers reach them the same way and search engines treat them like any other extension. They are often free where the .com is taken and say what the address is for.
How do I buy a domain I found here?

Do I need hosting or an SSL certificate as well?
