Barcode generator
Make a barcode that scans
Pick a format and type your number or text. The barcode is drawn as you type, the check digit is worked out for you, and nothing you enter leaves this page.
12 digits and we add the 13th, or all 13 and we check the last one. Free, no sign-up, no email. SVG for print, PNG for everything else.

How the check digit is worked out
Each digit is multiplied by 3 or 1, starting with 3 at the right. The check digit takes the sum up to the next multiple of ten, so a scanner can tell when one digit was misread.

Which barcode does your product need?
Retail checkouts read EAN and UPC, warehouses and carriers read Code 128, phones read QR codes. Each card below is drawn by the same code as the generator.
EAN-13 for retail worldwide
The 13-digit number on most packaged goods outside the US and Canada, and read by checkouts there too. The first digits come from your GS1 member prefix.13 digitsCheck digitRetail
UPC-A for US and Canadian retail
Twelve digits, used by retailers in the US and Canada. A UPC-A is an EAN-13 with a leading zero, so scanners everywhere read it.12 digitsCheck digitRetail
Code 128 for SKUs and shipping
Holds letters, digits and symbols in a compact strip. Use it for your own SKUs, bin locations, order numbers and parcel labels.Text and digitsChecksumWarehouse
QR codes for phones
A square code any phone camera reads. Put a link on packaging, an insert card or a shelf so buyers reach a product page, a manual or a reorder link.Links and textError correctionMarketing
Before you print
Four checks that save a reprint
Most scan failures come from the label, not the number.
Keep the quiet zone clear
Leave the white margin on both sides empty: no text, no edge of the label. Our files include it, so crop nothing.
Print between 80% and 200%
EAN and UPC are made to scan between 80% and 200% of their standard size. Smaller than that and the bars run together.
Dark bars on a light ground
Black on white reads best. Red bars, light grey bars or bars on a dark background often do not scan at all.
Scan one before you print many
Print a single label and read it with a phone or your checkout scanner, then send the whole run.

Bring barcodes in with your catalog
The product import reads barcode columns from a CSV, including files that carry several barcodes per variant, and the export writes them back out.
{ "@type": "Product", "name": "Arc Wireless Headphones", "sku": "ARC-BLK", "gtin13": "4006381333931"}Search engines and AI agents read it
Your storefront writes the barcode into each product's structured data as a GTIN, so search engines and shopping agents can match your product to the one a buyer asked for.

Questions
Barcode questions
Is the barcode generator free?
Yes. There is no sign-up and no email step. Make as many barcodes as you need and download each one as SVG or PNG.
Is what I type sent anywhere?
No. The barcode is drawn by code running in your browser. The number or text you type is never sent to our servers or stored.
Do I need to buy barcodes from GS1?
To sell through most retailers and marketplaces, your EAN or UPC number should come from GS1, the body that issues company prefixes, so the number is unique to your product. This tool draws the barcode for a number you already have. For your own SKUs, bin labels and order numbers, Code 128 works with any text you choose.
What is a check digit?
The last digit of an EAN or UPC. It is worked out from the other digits, so a scanner can detect a misread. Type the number without it and we add it; type it with the check digit and we tell you if it is wrong and what it should be.
What is the difference between EAN-13 and UPC-A?
UPC-A has 12 digits and is used in the US and Canada; EAN-13 has 13 and is used everywhere else. A UPC-A is an EAN-13 that starts with 0, so checkout scanners read both.
Should I download SVG or PNG?
SVG for anything printed: it is vector, so the bars stay sharp at any size and your designer can place it on packaging. PNG for spreadsheets, label apps and websites; pick the large size if it will be printed.
How big should a printed barcode be?
An EAN-13 at full size is about 37 mm wide including its quiet zones, and it is made to scan between 80% and 200% of that size. QR codes on packaging work best at 2 cm or larger, more when they will be scanned from a distance.
Which QR error correction level should I pick?
Medium suits most labels. Choose High when the code may be scratched, folded or partly covered by a logo; the pattern gets denser, so print it a little larger.
Can I put these barcodes on my Tanqory products?
Yes. Each variant has a barcode field, and the product CSV import reads barcode columns, so you can add them one by one or for the whole catalog at once.
Put your barcodes to work
Describe what you sell and Tanqory drafts the store for you. Add each variant's barcode once, and your admin, your assistant and your storefront's product data all use the same number.
