Set up your business in Thailand

The steps in the order most new sellers take them. Each is read from the official page linked under it.

  1. 1. Choose a legal form

DBD covers the single owner business (บุคคลธรรมดา, กิจการเจ้าของคนเดียว) under commercial registration, the partnership (ห้างหุ้นส่วน) and the company limited (บริษัทจำกัด).

  2. 2. Register the business

The Department of Business Development (DBD), Ministry of Commerce, handles commercial registration and registers companies and partnerships through DBD Biz Regist.

  3. 3. Get your tax number

The Revenue Department issues the taxpayer identification number, and individuals with a civil registration personal identification number may use it instead (page updated 14.03.2014).

  4. 4. Check when you must register for VAT

The Revenue Department states VAT applies to a business with annual turnover exceeding 1.8 million baht, registering on Form VAT 01 within 30 days (page updated 23.11.2020).

  5. 5. Follow the rules for selling online

DBD states an individual who buys or sells goods or services through electronic media over the internet must hold commercial registration, filed within 30 days of starting.

Questions about starting a business in Thailand

Which legal form should I choose in Thailand?

The official page in step 1 lists the forms a business in Thailand can take. Your choice decides how you register, how you are taxed and whether your own money is kept apart from the business, so an adviser in Thailand is worth asking before you decide.
