Product Listing Basics on Tanqory: Variants, Pricing, and Inventory Setup

Product Listing Basics on Tanqory: Variants, Pricing, and Inventory Setup If your store is a system, product listings are the foundation. They affect everything: how customers browse, how checkout works, how shipping is calculated, and how smoothly you can fulfill orders. Most beginner mistakes happen here: not because people do not try, but because they list products the way they think a store should look, not the way a store needs to operate. This guide walks you through product listing basics on Tanqory: how to structure variants, set pricing that makes sense, and configure inventory so you do not oversell, under-stock, or create a messy catalog you will regret later.

What "good product setup" looks like

Before we go step-by-step, here is the target:

• Customers can understand your product in 10 seconds
• Variants (if you have them) are clean and predictable
• Prices are consistent and support profit
• Inventory is accurate enough to prevent overselling
• Your catalog structure is scalable (so adding products later will not break things)

You do not need perfection. You need a clear, maintainable Version 1.

Step 1: Choose a product structure (one product vs variants)

Before you create anything, decide: is this one product with options, or multiple products?

Use one product with variants when:

• The product is essentially the same item with options
• Options are size, color, material, or format (that does not change the core product)
• Customers should compare options on one page

Examples:

• T-shirt (sizes and colors)
• Coffee beans (250g, 500g, 1kg)
• Phone case (iPhone models)

Create separate products when:

• The item is fundamentally different
• Pricing, photos, or descriptions change meaningfully
• Each item deserves its own page for SEO or clarity

Examples:

• "Basic Hoodie" vs "Premium Hoodie" with different fabrics
• Different product lines with different audiences
• Bundles that are marketed as separate products

Beginner tip: fewer product pages is not always better. Clearer is better.

Step 2: Build your variant system (keep it simple)

Variants help customers choose the right option: and help you fulfill correctly.

2.1 Limit your options (Version 1 rule)

For your first version:

• Aim for 1-2 option types per product (e.g., Size + Color)
• Keep total variants manageable

A practical guideline:

• 3 sizes × 3 colors = 9 variants (fine)
• 6 sizes × 8 colors = 48 variants (likely too heavy for a beginner store)

2.2 Name options in customer language

Use words customers recognize:

• Size: S / M / L (or numeric)
• Color: Black / White / Navy Avoid internal codes.

2.3 Decide what changes by variant

For each variant, confirm:

• price changes?
• inventory changes?
• weight changes (affects shipping)?
• SKU changes (helps operations)?

If weight differs by variant, set it. Shipping accuracy depends on it.

2.4 Use default variant behavior thoughtfully

If one variant is most popular, make it the default selection so customers do not have to work.

Step 3: Pricing basics (set prices that make sense)

Pricing is not just a number: it is your operating model.

3.1 Know your "true cost"

Before you price, estimate cost per order:

• product cost (COGS)
• packaging cost
• payment fees (approximate)
• shipping cost or subsidy (if you offer free shipping)
• returns allowance (even small)

You do not need perfect accounting. You need a realistic baseline.

3.2 Choose a simple pricing method

Pick one method and keep it consistent:

• Method A: Cost-plus (beginner-friendly) Price = cost × markup multiplier Example: cost $10, markup 2.5x → price $25
• Method B: Margin target Price = cost ÷ (1 - target margin) Example: cost $10, target margin 60% → $10 ÷ 0.4 = $25

Use whichever is easier for you: but do not guess blindly.

3.3 Handle variant pricing cleanly

If variants change cost (bigger sizes, premium materials), price differences should feel logical:

• keep small steps (e.g., +$2, +$5)
• avoid huge jumps unless value is obvious

3.4 Use compare-at pricing carefully (if available)

Compare-at pricing can help highlight discounts, but it must be honest and consistent. Avoid fake anchors. Trust matters more than a "sale" badge.

Step 4: Inventory setup (do not oversell, do not overcomplicate)

Inventory is where product listings become operations.

4.1 Decide your inventory approach

Choose one:

• Option 1: Track inventory (recommended for physical goods) You set stock quantities. The system prevents overselling.
• Option 2: Do not track inventory (works for digital goods or made-to-order) Use when stock is not a constraint. You still need clear delivery expectations.

4.2 Set inventory by variant

If you have variants, inventory must be tracked per variant (not just per product). Otherwise you will oversell a specific size/color.

4.3 Use low-stock thresholds (if supported)

Set a reminder threshold so you reorder before you hit zero.

4.4 Avoid "inventory chaos" in Version 1

Start with:

• fewer SKUs
• fewer variants
• accurate counts (even if small)

You can scale complexity later.

Step 5: SKUs, barcodes, and naming conventions (optional, but powerful)

Even a small store benefits from basic structure.

A simple SKU format

Use something you can understand later:

• Category + product + option Example: TSHIRT-BASIC-BLK-M

Keep it consistent. Consistency is more valuable than being "perfect."

Product titles: optimize for humans and search

Good titles are:

• specific
• not too long
• easy to scan

Example:

• "Cotton T-Shirt: Classic Fit"
• "Arabica Coffee Beans: Medium Roast"

Avoid:

• "Best Seller Product 2026!!!"
• internal codes in titles

Step 6: Product pages that convert (simple structure)

A strong product page reduces questions and increases confidence.

Use this structure:

• One clear product headline
• 3-5 benefit bullets
• What is included
• Key details (size, materials, care)
• Delivery & returns (short and clear)
• Variant selection + add to cart

Add a short FAQ if needed:

• "How long does delivery take?"
• "Can I exchange sizes?"

Step 7: The "catalog hygiene" checklist (so your store scales)

As you add products, your store can become messy quickly. Use this checklist:

• Use consistent category/collection names
• Keep product naming style consistent
• Do not duplicate products unless needed
• Archive products you no longer sell (do not delete if you want reporting/history)
• Use consistent photo style (background, angles, lighting)
• Review top products monthly and improve one page at a time

Your catalog is a living system. Keep it clean.

Common beginner mistakes (and fixes)

Mistake 1: Too many variants too soon Fix: limit options and launch with fewer variants.

Mistake 2: Pricing without true costs Fix: estimate costs and pick a simple method.

Mistake 3: Tracking inventory incorrectly Fix: track by variant and update counts weekly.

Mistake 4: Confusing product titles Fix: use human-friendly titles and clear descriptors.

Mistake 5: No clarity on delivery and returns Fix: add short "Delivery & returns" section on every product page.

Once your product listings are clean, everything else becomes easier: ads, SEO, shipping, and customer support. Start small:

• 3-10 products
• clean variant logic
• pricing you can defend
• inventory you can trust

Then improve one thing every week. That is how catalogs scale without chaos.
