What each part of the bill of lading does
A bill of lading is the receipt for the freight, the contract with the carrier and, for an order bill, the title to the goods. Each card is cut from the document the generator draws.
Number and barcode
The bill of lading number ties the paper to your order and to the carrier’s PRO number. The barcode carries the same number in Code 128, so a dock scanner reads it without typing.
Shipper and consignee
Who the freight leaves from and who receives it. A straight bill names the consignee, and only that party can take the goods.
Carrier and references
The carrier’s name and its four-letter SCAC, the PRO number it tracks the freight by, and the trailer and seal numbers that show the load was not opened on the way.
The freight lines
Handling units and pieces, weight, NMFC item and freight class for every kind of goods. Class and weight set the price, so a wrong class is the usual reason for a rebill.
Who pays the freight
Prepaid means you pay, collect means the consignee pays on delivery, third party bills someone else. A collect on delivery amount tells the driver what to collect for the goods.
Three signatures
You sign when the freight is tendered, the driver signs for the units counted at pickup, and the consignee signs on delivery. Special instructions above the signatures, such as a liftgate, become part of what the carrier agreed to.

Questions about bills of lading
What is a bill of lading?
It is the document that travels with freight. It lists what is shipped, from whom and to whom, and the carrier signs it at pickup as a receipt for the goods and as the contract for carrying them. Signed by the consignee, it becomes the proof of delivery.
What is the difference between a straight and an order bill of lading?
A straight bill names the consignee and cannot be transferred; it suits goods that are already paid for. An order bill is made out to the order of a party and can be endorsed to someone else, which is why banks use it with letters of credit. This generator makes a straight bill.
How do I find the freight class and NMFC item?
The National Motor Freight Classification gives each kind of goods an item number and one of 18 classes, from 50 to 500. Density, handling and liability set the class. Ask your carrier or check the classification before you ship, because a wrong class leads to a reclass and a new invoice.
What do prepaid, collect and third party mean?
Prepaid means the shipper pays the freight charges, collect means the consignee pays them on delivery, and third party means someone else is billed, such as a buyer's logistics provider. Tick third party and the generator adds a bill-to block.
What if my freight is hazardous?
Mark the line as hazardous and the bill shows an X in the HM column. Hazardous freight also needs its proper shipping name, class and an emergency response contact on the paperwork, so check the rules for your mode and your carrier's requirements before pickup.
Is the bill of lading generator free, and is my data stored?
It is free, with no sign-up and no email. The form, the preview and the PDF are all made in your browser; nothing you type is sent to Tanqory or anyone else.
Can I print it or send it as a PDF?
Yes. Download the PDF, or open it in a new tab and print from there. Print three copies at pickup: one for you, one for the driver and one that travels with the freight to the consignee.
How is a bill of lading different from a packing slip or commercial invoice?
The bill of lading is between you and the carrier. A packing slip tells the receiver what is in the box, and a commercial invoice tells customs what the goods are worth. In Tanqory, packing slips, invoices and customs forms print from the order or the batch.
Does Tanqory book pallet freight?
Tanqory buys parcel labels with FedEx, UPS, DHL Express, Easyship and Shippo and records freight fees on your purchase orders. For pallet freight, book with your freight carrier and bring this bill of lading to the dock.
